I recently worked with Art on a drone video project and everything was 1st class from the time we started until the finished video---which was just spectacular and included perfect video editing including gentle fades, scene transitions, a great musical selection, and descriptive graphics that were perfectly timed and placed.

Art's exceptional depth of knowledge and experience as a full-scale pilot really comes thru in his drone piloting & videography which is so precise and exacting yet flows like a gentle aerial ballet.  The video that Bird's Eye Drone Imaging produced for me was literally breathtaking and everyone who has seen it is completely amazed.

Thank you Art for some incredible work!!!

A bit about Chief Pilot Cap Art Ritchie...

Bird's Eye Drone Imaging, LLC was launched in 2015 by Cap Art Ritchie.

This was made possible by the newly created FAA Certificates of Authorization (COA) for Commercial Drone / Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) which first became available in 2015.  Up to that point in time almost all supposedly commercial drone operations were operating illegally without FAA authorization.  Many of these operations were being flown by hobbyist who didn't possess any knowledge of the national airspace system or the rules that govern it.  Most in fact were not even licensed pilots let alone commercial pilots.

Cap Art Ritchie has over 40 years experience as both a model and full scale aircraft pilot.  Bird's Eye Drone Imaging is a natural combining of Cap Art's love of flying / aviation and photography.  Cap Ritchie currently holds Commercial, Airline Transport and Flight Instructor Pilot Certificates along with Single Engine, Multi Engine and numerous jet aircraft type ratings.  Cap Art is a 30+ year veteran United Airline's pilot who has served as Captain on Airbus A319, A320 and Boeing B737, B757 & B767 aircraft.

Meet the Fleet...

We currently fly several DJI Phantom 3 Professionals and  the incredible DJI Inspire 2.
Catch a quick viideo of our New Inspire 2 here!

Inspire 2DJI Inspire 2

The Inspire 1 was a revelation. The first filmmaking drone in the world to integrate an HD video transmission system, 360° rotating gimbal and a 4K camera,as well as the simplicity of app control. The launches of the Zenmuse X5 and X5R cameras further cemented the Inspire as a critical tool for filmmakers around the globe.
Zenmuse X5S Camera
The Inspire 2 takes everything that was good about the Inspire 1 and improves it. An all-new image processing system records at up to 5.2K in CinemaDNG RAW,Apple ProRes and more. It goes from 0 to 50mph (80kph) in just 5 seconds and hits a maximum speed of 58mph (94kph) and has a max descent speed of 9m/sfor unheard of speed and agility in an aircraft this size. A dual battery system prolongs the flight time to a maximum of 27 minutes (with an X4S),while self-heatingtechnology allows it to fly even in low temperatures. FlightAutonomy has been revised and developed specifically for the Inspire 2,providing two directions of obstacleavoidance and sensor redundancy. Increased intelligence adds multiple intelligent flight modes, including Spotlight Pro, giving even single pilots the ability to create complex, dramatic shots. An upgraded video transmission system is now capable of dual signal frequency and dual channel, streaming video from an onboard FPV camera and the maincamera simultaneously, for better pilot and camera operator collaboration.

Retractable Carbon Fiber Arms

The prop arms rest in a lowered position when the Inspire is on the ground, acting as landing gear. Once in the air, they can be retracted to give the camera unobstructed views across 360-degrees. Carbon fiber is used in the construction because of its high strength to weight ratio

Inspire 2 Aerial Imaging

Compared with the Inspire 1, the Inspire 2 utilizes an innovative structure that separates the CineCore 2.0 image processing system from the camera and places it inside the aircraft. This means that the sensor and optical system are detachable and easily connected using a newly designed quick-release connector. Designing the camera system in this way effectively protects the sensor from magnetic interference originating from the processor. It also allows a range of lightweight camera units to be connected as required by different scenes. The uprated M4/3 sensor — and support for interchangeable lenses — allows the Zenmuse X5S to capture high resolution images of incredibly high quality, when combined with the extraordinary CineCore 2.0 image processing system.

Dual Transmitters

For an even greater level of precision a second transmitter can be used allowing two people control of the same aircraft. One person pilots the flight path while the other aims the gimbaled camera. Each user has their own screen to see exactly what is being shot in real-time in 720p

Phantom 3 Professionals

The Phantom 3 Professional is a very sophisticated aircraft that relies on a GPS-based navigation system to maintain a high degree flight stability which allow videographers to get the smoothest possible shoots.  In addition to the GPS the Phantom 3 utilizes an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) using a 6-axis gyroscope plus accelerometers to keep track the slightest tilt or change in acceleration. This data is relayed to the Main Controller and used to help maintain a stable flight.

The Phantom 3 has a range of over 1.2 mile and is capable of flight times up to 23 minutes.

Live 720p Monitoring

A live 720p HD image is presented at the controller enabling the pilot full camera control, allowing the setting of parameters such as camera tilt, ISO, shutter speed, white balance as well as video start/stop and to take photos. A mobile device is tethered to the transmitter via a USB with a wireless range of up to 1.2 miles line-of-sight (depending on conditions).

Vision Positioning System for Indoor Navigation

Vision Positioning System uses a specially designed camera as well as sonic echolocation to provide a high degree of stability indoors and while close to the ground very comparable to what the GPS does outdoors. This technology allows the Phantom 3 to hold its location, stop when the controls are released, and quickly respond to pilot commands indoors even when GPS is unavailable

DJI 4K Camera

A flying camera that packs years of experience in aerial imaging into one compact, system, shooting 4K video at up to 30 frames per second and capturing 12 megapixel photos that look crisper and cleaner than ever.

Professional Lens

The Phantom 3 Professional’s camera has an f/2.8 lens with a 94⁰ field of view, virtually eliminating the unwanted lens distortion common in other cameras not built to shoot from the air. Built from 9 separate elements, including two aspherical elements, that reduce weight and complexity without sacrificing image quality, this lens brings the brightest, truest colors to life.

Stable Footage

Paired with DJI’s industry-standard gimbaled stabilization technology, the Phantom 3 camera is held perfectly stable. This 3-axis gimbal makes complex shots and hovering for long exposure incredibly steady. The Phantom 3 camera will capture smooth, stable footage throughout the entire flight. The camera and gimbal are fully controllable by the pilot through the remote controller and dedicated DJI Pilot app.

The camera system is capable of multiple Video Resolutions and Frame Rates.  Media is recorded internally to a micro SD card.
